Concrete Requirements for a 2 Post Car Lift

Short answer

A 10,000–12,000 lb 2 post car lift needs a minimum 4 in of 3,000 PSI concrete, poured level within 3° across the anchor footprint. Bigger lifts want more: 15,000 lb needs 4½ in / 3,000 PSI, and 18,000+ lb needs 6 in / 3,000 PSI. The install manual is the authority — every brand's manual publishes the exact requirement for that specific model, and we quote it on every product page.

Why concrete matters more than shop owners expect

A 2 post car lift transmits the full load of the vehicle plus lift weight into eight to twelve 3/4-in anchor bolts drilled into the slab. When the concrete is thinner or weaker than spec, the anchors pull, the column tilts, and the vehicle falls. This is not a theoretical risk — it's the second most common failure mode after operator error, and it's the one that puts installers in court. Every ALI-certified 2 post car lift is certified against a specific slab spec. Install on thinner concrete and you've voided the certification.

Measuring your existing slab

The easiest way is a core sample: drill a 1-in-diameter hole through the slab where the lift columns will land, measure to the bottom. Rent the core drill from a local rental yard ($60/day). Two holes at the two-column footprint is enough.

Cheaper alternative: if a builder's mark or expansion joint runs through the bay, look at the edge — most exposed edges show the concrete thickness. Attached-garage slabs poured in the 1990s or later are usually 4 in as the code-minimum floor; commercial shop floors from the 1970s or before were often 3 in and will not pass. Anything with cracks radiating from an existing anchor point should be assumed under-spec.

Slab level matters as much as thickness. Set a 4-ft carpenter's level across the anchor footprint of both columns. If one end is more than 1/2 in off across 4 ft, shim washers may not correct the tilt at full rise — you either need a thin skim coat or a different anchor location.

PSI: what it means, how you check

Concrete PSI is the compressive strength — a 3,000 PSI slab can carry 3,000 lb of pressure per square inch before it crushes. Most residential garage slabs poured after 1990 are 3,000 PSI as the code-minimum. Older or DIY-poured slabs are commonly 2,500 PSI or below. A rebound hammer test ($90 to hire a local structural engineer, $120 to rent) gives a non-destructive PSI reading; a core sample sent to a testing lab is the gold-standard $200 answer.

For most home-garage buyers, if the slab is a post-1990 attached garage in a code-compliant new-construction house, you can assume 3,000 PSI. For anything older, commercial, or DIY-poured, get it tested before you buy a 2 post car lift.

When you have to pour new concrete

  • Existing slab is thinner than 4 in. Cutting a section out and re-pouring 4 ½ in in the two-column footprint (roughly 4 ft × 12 ft) costs $800–$1,400 depending on region. Add rebar or a full welded-wire mat.
  • Existing slab is under 2,500 PSI. Same fix — cut and re-pour with 3,000+ PSI concrete.
  • Existing slab tilts more than 1 in across the two-column footprint. Grind the high side or skim-coat the low side.

Any new pour must cure 28 days before you drill anchors. That's not marketing; that's ACI-318 concrete spec.
