Ceiling clearance by 2 post car lift capacity
Ceiling clearance is the single most-blocked reason a 2 post car lift buyer has to return an order — the number in this column is the minimum ceiling height the manufacturer's install manual requires. If your bay is exactly at the minimum, you'll need a low-ceiling / extended-column variant of the same lift model. The five 2 post car lift dimensions that actually matter
1. Overall width (post-to-post outside dimension)
The distance across the two columns is the widest dimension of a 2 post car lift. On a symmetric 10,000 lb lift this is typically around 12 feet outside-to-outside; asymmetric lifts run a foot wider or narrower depending on arm geometry. The key measurement is inside-to-inside clearance between the posts — the drive-through width — not the outside width, since drive-through is what a vehicle actually has to clear.
2. Drive-through width (inside clearance between posts)
This is what a car's mirrors have to clear when driving in. On a standard 2 post car lift the drive-through is typically 100–115 inches. Wide-service (SW) variants push drive-through past 130 inches — the reason wide-service configurations exist is dually-truck mirror clearance. Rotary's wide-service SW models specifically publish this dimension as the primary differentiator.
3. Post height (column height above the floor)
Post height is what determines your minimum ceiling requirement. A standard 2 post car lift post is 145 inches (12'1"). Low-ceiling variants drop to 136 inches (11'4"). Extended-height columns push to 158+ inches (13'2"+) — the extended-height variants exist because 3/4-ton pickup and van shops need a taller overhead beam to clear tall vehicles at full lift.
4. Maximum rise height (how far up the car goes)
Rise height varies more than any other 2 post car lift spec: 68 inches on a portable M7K, up to 74–77 inches on a standard 10K, and 80+ inches on extended-column commercial units. A standard rise gets a 6-foot mechanic under a lifted vehicle with head clearance; a shorter rise means bending. Look at the arm-lifting-pad-max-height figure in each install manual — that's the number you actually stand under.
5. Arm reach (minimum and maximum lifting-pad extension)
Arm reach is why symmetric and asymmetric 2 post car lifts differ so much in vehicle fit. Symmetric arms are equal length front-to-back — they suit trucks and vans that load evenly across the wheelbase. Asymmetric arms rotate the vehicle rearward, giving door clearance on cars — this is why nearly every mid-sedan 2 post car lift install is asymmetric. Both types publish minimum-and-maximum pad-to-pad distances in the install manual; if you lift both cars and trucks, an adjustable-symmetric/asymmetric lift covers both.
Concrete requirements are a dimension too
Every 2 post car lift install manual specifies a minimum concrete slab thickness and PSI rating. Across the lifts on this site the requirements cluster tightly:
- 4 inches minimum concrete thickness — required by nearly every 2 post car lift install manual in the 7,000–12,000 lb range.
- 4.25 to 6 inches for 15,000–20,000 lb lifts — heavier-duty 2 post car lift models require thicker slabs, particularly reinforced concrete.
- 3,000 to 3,500 PSI minimum concrete strength — this is standard residential-garage-slab spec, but a lot of older residential slabs test lower. If your slab is over 20 years old, a core sample is cheap insurance.
- 28-day cure — poured concrete has to reach full cure before anchors are set. Fresh pours cannot take a 2 post car lift install for a month.

Bay space you actually need — beyond the lift itself
The 2 post car lift dimensions in the manual are minimums. In practice you need working room around the lift too:
- Add 2 feet on each side beyond the post outside-width for door swing and walk-around clearance.
- Add 4 feet front-to-back beyond the maximum vehicle wheelbase you'll lift — you need to walk around either end.
- Overhead: 6 inches of buffer above the minimum ceiling from the install manual, minimum. HVAC ducts, joists, and garage-door tracks eat into stated ceiling height and buyers routinely miss the actual clear point.
- Electrical panel proximity: a 2 post car lift needs a dedicated 208–230V single-phase circuit within reasonable conduit distance. On most lifts we sell, 20 amps is enough; some heavier commercial 2 post car lift models call for 30.
