ALI (Automotive Lift Institute) is the U.S. safety-certification body that tests automotive lifts against ANSI/ALI ALCTV-2017 — the national safety standard for vehicle lifts. A Gold Label on a 2 post car lift means the model was independently tested at the design level (load, stability, controls, structural), and every unit off the line is inspected before shipping. OSHA and every U.S. state auto-shop inspection program require ALI-certified lifts on commercial shop floors. For a home garage, ALI is strongly recommended; for a commercial shop, it is legally required.
What ALI actually tests
Manufacturers submit a 2 post car lift model to a third-party lab (Intertek is the ANSI/ALI-recognized lab for most brands). The lab runs the model through:
- Load and overload testing at 100%, 150%, and structural failure to confirm the rated capacity is genuine.
- Cycle-life testing — thousands of raise/lower cycles under load to confirm hydraulic, cable, and lock-mechanism durability.
- Stability testing with the load offset — asymmetric load, single-arm load, side load.
- Control-system safety — descent-arrest, dead-man switch, cable-slack detection, hydraulic-line failure protection.
If the model passes, the manufacturer earns the right to affix the Gold Label to every unit of that model produced under continuous certification. The certification is ongoing — the manufacturer is audited annually.
Why ALI is a legal requirement for commercial shops
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.212 requires that all point-of-operation hazards be guarded. For automotive lifts, OSHA has adopted ANSI/ALI ALCTV as the industry standard that satisfies this requirement. In practice:
- All 50 U.S. states either explicitly require ALI-certified lifts for commercial shops or defer to OSHA's adoption of ANSI/ALI ALCTV.
- Insurance policies for auto shops typically require ALI certification as a condition of coverage. Buying a non-ALI lift can void your shop's liability insurance.
- Inspections and audits — states with automotive-repair licensing (New York, California, and others) inspect for the Gold Label.
If you are opening or running a commercial auto shop, you need an ALI-certified 2 post car lift. Full stop.
Is ALI required for a home garage?
Legally, no. OSHA does not regulate home garages, and no state licenses home-use lifts. Practically, yes — an ALI-certified 2 post car lift is what you want holding up your car while you're under it. The tests are meaningful: an uncertified lift may work fine for years, or the cylinder may pull free at 80% of rated capacity on a Tuesday afternoon. Save the $500–$1,000 you'd save on a non-certified lift by buying a smaller ALI-certified model instead.
Which brands are ALI-certified
Rotary Lift, Forward Lift, Challenger Lifts, and BendPak all sell ALI-certified 2 post car lift models — but not every model in every brand's line is certified. Some brand lines contain both ALI-certified and non-certified models (typically the low-price "economy" tier is non-certified, and the shop-grade tier is Gold-Label). Brands to avoid for commercial use: unbranded or low-price imports sold via Amazon, eBay, Harbor Freight, or generic online retailers. These are typically uncertified, and while some are structurally fine, none have passed ANSI/ALI ALCTV.
How to verify a lift is ALI-certified
- Look for the Gold Label — a physical placard mounted to the column showing the ALI Gold Label and the model's ALI directory number.
- Search the ALI online directory at autolift.org — every currently certified model is listed. If the model number is not on the directory, the lift is not currently certified regardless of what the seller says.
- Certification lapses. A model that was certified 10 years ago but is no longer on the directory has an expired certification. Do not buy old inventory of a lapsed-cert model for commercial use.
What certification does not cover
ALI certifies the lift design and manufacture. It does not certify:
- Installation — bolted to the wrong slab, the lift is unsafe regardless of certification.
- Maintenance — a certified lift 10 years past its cable and cylinder-seal service is not safe.
- Operator training — most lift accidents are procedural, not equipment failures.
